In value terms, spacecraft production surged to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 481%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, approx. X units of civil spacecraft, satellites and launch vehicles were exported in SADC; increasing by 61% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports, however, faced a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 363% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, spacecraft exports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 586%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 86% of total exports in 2022. Botswana (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 5.4% share, followed by Namibia (5.4%). Tanzania (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -10.9% from 2012 to 2022. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Botswana (-4.0%) and Namibia (-27.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+20 p.p.), Botswana (+3.4 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Namibia (-26.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest spacecraft supplier in SADC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($X), with a 1.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 0.3% share.
In South Africa, spacecraft exports declined by an average annual rate of -14.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Botswana (-9.9% per year) and Namibia (-28.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -57.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 791%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (-1.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Spacecraft Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, approx. X units of civil spacecraft, satellites and launch vehicles were imported in SADC; jumping by 514% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded resilient growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, spacecraft imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 217% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the largest importing country with an import of around X units, which finished at 70% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X units) and Zambia (X units), together creating a 28% share of total imports.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the civil spacecraft, satellites and launch vehicles imports, with a CAGR of +21.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Mozambique experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. South Africa (+52 p.p.) and Mozambique (+15 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Zambia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 97% share of total imports.
Mozambique, with a CAGR of +47.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -72.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 183%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
