Clove Market Size in SADC
In 2022, the SADC clove market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption showed moderate growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Clove Production in SADC
In value terms, clove production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 15%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
Madagascar (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of clove production, accounting for 61% of total volume. Moreover, clove production in Madagascar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tanzania (X tons), threefold.
In Madagascar, clove production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Tanzania (+2.3% per year) and Comoros (+7.0% per year).
In 2022, the average clove yield in SADC shrank modestly to X kg per ha, leveling off at the year before. In general, the yield recorded a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 23%. Over the period under review, the clove yield hit record highs at X kg per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of cloves in SADC reduced modestly to X ha, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 17%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to clove production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.
Clove Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2022, overseas shipments of cloves decreased by -14.4% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, clove exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a noticeable descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 61% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Madagascar was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons) and Comoros (X tons), together making up a 25% share of total exports.
Madagascar experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of cloves. Tanzania (-3.1%) and Comoros (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Comoros increased by +9 percentage points.
In value terms, Madagascar ($X) remains the largest clove supplier in SADC, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.
In Madagascar, clove exports shrank by an average annual rate of -3.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (-2.3% per year) and Comoros (-11.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Comoros ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Clove Imports
Imports in SADC
Clove imports contracted slightly to X tons in 2022, waning by -1.7% on 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, clove imports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the major importer of cloves, mixing up 67% of total imports. Madagascar (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Mauritius (X tons). All these countries together held near 20% share of total imports. Angola (X tons), Comoros (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to clove imports into South Africa stood at +1.5%. At the same time, Angola (+5.8%), Mauritius (+3.7%) and Comoros (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +5.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Madagascar (-2.3%) and Tanzania (-11.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Mauritius increased by +2.5 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cloves in SADC, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 13% share.
In South Africa, clove imports plunged by an average annual rate of -2.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+4.3% per year) and Madagascar (-6.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, declining by -6.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
