Rock cutter exports surged to X units in 2022, picking up by 43% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 74%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, rock cutter exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) represented the major exporter of coal or rock cutters and tunnelling machinery, mixing up 57% of total exports. Botswana (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mozambique (X units), Malawi (X units) and Tanzania (X units). All these countries together held near 35% share of total exports. Zambia (X units) and Namibia (X units) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to rock cutter exports from South Africa stood at -11.8%. At the same time, Botswana (+23.6%), Mozambique (+19.6%), Namibia (+7.2%), Malawi (+7.2%) and Zambia (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +23.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tanzania (-13.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Botswana, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia and Namibia increased by +15, +6.9, +4.9, +2.3 and +2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest rock cutter supplier in SADC, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Botswana ($X), with a 9.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 4.3% share.

In South Africa, rock cutter exports plunged by an average annual rate of -1.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (+42.4% per year) and Tanzania (-6.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 52% against the previous year. Export price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+38.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of coal or rock cutters and tunnelling machinery imported in SADC rose markedly to X units, growing by 8.6% on the year before. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 84% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, rock cutter imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 71% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units), distantly followed by Lesotho (X units), Tanzania (X units), Mozambique (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Mauritius (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Angola (X units) and Zambia (X units) were the major importers of coal or rock cutters and tunnelling machinery, together creating 89% of total imports. Madagascar (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to rock cutter imports into South Africa stood at -2.1%. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+20.4%), Madagascar (+7.2%), Mauritius (+5.0%) and Tanzania (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +20.4% from 2012-2022. Angola and Lesotho experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mozambique (-3.0%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (-5.1%) and Zambia (-12.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zimbabwe (+5.7 p.p.), Tanzania (+4.8 p.p.), Mauritius (+3.7 p.p.) and Lesotho (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia saw its share reduced by -2.8% and -9.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coal or rock cutters and tunnelling machinery in SADC, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -1.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+11.2% per year) and Mauritius (+6.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 31% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 39%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
