The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coarse animal hair exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 232%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Lesotho (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) was the largest exporter of coarse animal hair in SADC, committing 100% of total export.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of -3.7%).

In value terms, Lesotho ($X) remains the largest coarse animal hair supplier in SADC, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

In Lesotho, coarse animal hair exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the period from 2012-2022.

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 130%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lesotho ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.

The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, coarse animal hair imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 82% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X kg), generating a 12% share of total imports. The following importers - Zambia (X kg) and Botswana (X kg) - each reached a 4% share of total imports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the coarse animal hair imports, with a CAGR of +60.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Swaziland (+19.3%) and Botswana (+16.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Zambia (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+80 p.p.) and Swaziland (+6.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Zambia saw its share reduced by -15.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coarse animal hair in SADC, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 7.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 1.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +48.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Swaziland (+21.0% per year) and Botswana (+27.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 747% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 775%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+9.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
