Export price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine years. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 52% of total imports. Botswana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Mauritius (9.2%), Namibia (5.1%) and Angola (4.9%). The following importers - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) - together made up 7.6% of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritius (+28.0%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+21.1%) and Botswana (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +28.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Namibia (-4.5%), Swaziland (-4.7%) and Angola (-10.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mauritius (+8.4 p.p.), Botswana (+5.5 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola and South Africa saw its share reduced by -4.7% and -11.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cocoa powder (containing added sugar) in SADC, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Botswana ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with an 11% share.

In South Africa, cocoa powder with sugar imports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Botswana (-0.4% per year) and Mauritius (+28.2% per year).
