Coconut Production in SADC

From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Tanzania (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Comoros (X tons), together accounting for 93% of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Comoros (with a CAGR of +0.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced a decline in the production figures.
In 2022, the average coconut yield in SADC dropped modestly to X tons per ha, which is down by -3% against the previous year's figure. In general, the yield recorded a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 13%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of coconuts in SADC totaled X ha, surging by 3% against 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the coconut harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of coconuts exported in SADC skyrocketed to X tons, jumping by 19% compared with the year before. Overall, exports, however, faced a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 252%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, coconut exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a precipitous shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 106%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) represented roughly 95% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Seychelles (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) - each reached a 4.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Seychelles (with a CAGR of +18.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest coconut supplying countries in SADC were South Africa ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Tanzania ($X), together accounting for 90% of total exports. Seychelles and Madagascar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.9%.
Seychelles, with a CAGR of +32.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -37.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 89%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Seychelles (+11.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Coconut Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of coconuts, when their volume increased by 22% to X tons. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 116%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, coconut imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Mauritius (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Angola (X tons) represented roughly 92% of total imports in 2022. Mozambique (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Angola (with a CAGR of +28.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, Mauritius ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coconuts in SADC, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 13% share.
In Mauritius, coconut imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-3.6% per year) and Mozambique (+1.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -23.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 45% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
