In value terms, coffee extract production fell modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 9.5%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, approx. X tons of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates were exported in SADC; with an increase of 18% against 2020. Over the period under review, exports saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, coffee extract exports fell to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 106% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined modestly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Tanzania (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 96% of total exports in 2021.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +24.7%).
In value terms, the largest coffee extract supplying countries in SADC were South Africa ($X) and Tanzania ($X).
Among the main exporting countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +24.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, falling by -16.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+0.5%).
Coffee Extract Imports
Imports in SADC
For the third year in a row, SADC recorded growth in purchases abroad of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates, which increased by 9.1% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +56.8% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, coffee extract imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 26%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 72% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), generating an 8.1% share of total imports. Namibia (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +10.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+15.0%), Zambia (+12.4%), Angola (+8.9%) and Mauritius (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +15.0% from 2012-2021. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Botswana (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +10 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coffee extracts, essences and concentrates in SADC, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 4.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 3.2% share.
In South Africa, coffee extract imports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (+3.2% per year) and Namibia (+0.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
