In 2022, the SADC combine harvester market increased by 8.4% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, consumption enjoyed measured growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Combine Harvester Production in SADC
In value terms, combine harvester production shrank rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 147% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC
After three years of growth, overseas shipments of combine harvester-threshers decreased by -56.5% to X units in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 195%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then plummeted in the following year.
In value terms, combine harvester exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 176%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced notably in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X units) was the major exporter of combine harvester-threshers, constituting 78% of total exports. Namibia (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Zambia (X units). All these countries together held approx. 18% share of total exports. Botswana (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to combine harvester exports from South Africa stood at +2.7%. At the same time, Botswana (+11.6%) and Namibia (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +11.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zambia (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Namibia (+3.4 p.p.) and Botswana (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Zambia saw its share reduced by -3.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest combine harvester supplier in SADC, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 7.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 5.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -2.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zambia (-0.8% per year) and Namibia (-0.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 36%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+15.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Combine Harvester Imports
Imports in SADC
Combine harvester imports skyrocketed to X units in 2022, rising by 37% compared with the year before. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, combine harvester imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 98%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
South Africa prevails in imports structure, reaching X units, which was near 71% of total imports in 2022. Zimbabwe (X units) held an 8.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mozambique (7.6%). Tanzania (X units), Namibia (X units), Angola (X units) and Zambia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of combine harvester-threshers. At the same time, Mozambique (+20.5%) and Zimbabwe (+11.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +20.5% from 2012-2022. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Namibia (-2.3%), Angola (-6.2%) and Zambia (-9.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mozambique (+6.3 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+5.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola, Zambia and South Africa saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -2.9% and -6.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported combine harvester-threshers in SADC, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 7.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 2.8% share.
In South Africa, combine harvester imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (+15.3% per year) and Tanzania (+5.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 27% against the previous year. Import price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, combine harvester import price increased by +75.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 86% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
