Exports in SADC

In 2021, shipments abroad of computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, faced a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, computing machinery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable reduction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 93% of total exports in 2021.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof exports, with a CAGR of -12.6% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (-2.5 p.p.) significantly weakened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest computing machinery supplier in SADC.

In South Africa, computing machinery exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.4% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 8.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to +11.7% per year.

Computing Machinery Imports

Imports in SADC

Computing machinery imports surged to X tons in 2021, rising by 19% on 2020. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 52%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, computing machinery imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild setback. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 62% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons) and Angola (X tons), together constituting a 15% share of total imports. Zimbabwe (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to computing machinery imports into South Africa stood at -38.2%. Mauritius (-1.4%), Madagascar (-1.4%), Zambia (-2.0%), Zimbabwe (-2.0%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (-3.2%), Botswana (-3.2%), Tanzania (-3.6%), Mozambique (-4.8%), Angola (-8.1%) and Namibia (-9.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania, Angola, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Mauritius and Madagascar increased by +8, +6.6, +3.2, +3.2, +3, +2.4, +2.4, +1.9, +1.8 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported computing machinery and parts and accessories thereof in SADC, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 4.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 2.5% share.

In South Africa, computing machinery imports plunged by an average annual rate of -2.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (-4.8% per year) and Mauritius (-1.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 4,812% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+58.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
