The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +62.6% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 62%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, exports of concentrated lemon and other citrus fruit juice reached $X in 2021. Total exports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -0.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 47%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +11.4% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa decreased by -1.7 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest concentrated lemon and other citrus fruit juice supplier in SADC, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 1.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +2.5%.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe amounted to $X per ton.

Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 75%. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-1.8%), Zambia (-2.8%) and Namibia (-4.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Malawi, Botswana and Democratic Republic of the Congo increased by +40, +7.9 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malawi ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported concentrated lemon and other citrus fruit juice in SADC, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Malawi totaled +29.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (-5.2% per year) and Botswana (+123.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
