The SADC concentrated orange juice market shrank modestly to $X in 2021, which is down by -3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Concentrated Orange Juice Production in SADC
In value terms, concentrated orange juice production expanded to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +58.4% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Concentrated Orange Juice Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2021, approx. X tons of concentrated orange juice were exported in SADC; increasing by 9.2% against 2020 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, concentrated orange juice exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the largest exporter of concentrated orange juice, generating 85% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), comprising a 12% share of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to concentrated orange juice exports from South Africa stood at +1.7%. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+54.2%) and Tanzania (+28.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +54.2% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Zimbabwe and Tanzania increased by +11 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest concentrated orange juice supplier in SADC, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 4.3% share of total exports.
In South Africa, concentrated orange juice exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (+48.9% per year) and Tanzania (+24.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Export price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Concentrated Orange Juice Imports
Imports in SADC
Concentrated orange juice imports rose rapidly to X tons in 2021, increasing by 6.7% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, concentrated orange juice imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 33%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Botswana represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 33% of total imports. Swaziland (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (9.9%), Zambia (7.8%), Mozambique (7.7%), Zimbabwe (6.3%) and Lesotho (6.2%).
Imports into Botswana increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Africa (+9.9%), Mozambique (+7.1%) and Lesotho (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +9.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zambia (-1.2%), Swaziland (-4.4%) and Zimbabwe (-7.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Botswana (+15 p.p.), South Africa (+5.7 p.p.), Mozambique (+3.6 p.p.) and Lesotho (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Zimbabwe (-6.8 p.p.) and Swaziland (-7.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Botswana ($X), Swaziland ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 58% of total imports.
Botswana, with a CAGR of +4.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 28% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
