In 2022, coniferous wood in the rough exports in SADC skyrocketed to X cubic meters, increasing by 27% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 217% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the coniferous wood in rough exports attained the maximum at X cubic meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, coniferous wood in the rough exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 227% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Madagascar represented the largest exporter of coniferous wood in the rough in SADC, with the volume of exports reaching X cubic meters, which was near 62% of total exports in 2022. Mozambique (X cubic meters) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Zimbabwe (6.5%). Swaziland (X cubic meters), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X cubic meters) and Tanzania (X cubic meters) took a minor share of total exports.
Madagascar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the coniferous wood in the rough exports, with a CAGR of +39.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Swaziland (+29.2%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+17.9%), Tanzania (+13.3%) and Mozambique (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-11.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Madagascar (+60 p.p.), Mozambique (+9.2 p.p.), Swaziland (+4 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.2 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Zimbabwe (-11.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Madagascar ($X) remains the largest coniferous wood in the rough supplier in SADC, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 1.2% share.
In Madagascar, coniferous wood in the rough exports expanded at an average annual rate of +59.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mozambique (+20.4% per year) and Zimbabwe (-15.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per cubic meter, declining by -26.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 101%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per cubic meter in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per cubic meter), while Swaziland ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+15.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imports of Coniferous Wood In The Rough
Imports in SADC
Coniferous wood in the rough imports fell slightly to X cubic meters in 2022, dropping by -2.3% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports recorded a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, coniferous wood in the rough imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 61% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Botswana (X cubic meters) represented the largest importer of coniferous wood in the rough, mixing up 35% of total imports. Mozambique (X cubic meters) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Tanzania (14%), Angola (12%), Lesotho (10%) and Namibia (5.6%). Swaziland (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Botswana decreased at an average annual rate of -7.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Angola (+11.9%) and Tanzania (+9.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +11.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mozambique (-2.6%), Lesotho (-11.1%), Namibia (-11.6%) and Swaziland (-19.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+12 p.p.), Angola (+10 p.p.), Mozambique (+6.8 p.p.) and Botswana (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Namibia (-2.7 p.p.), Lesotho (-4 p.p.) and Swaziland (-11.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Botswana ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Angola ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 82% of total imports.
Tanzania, with a CAGR of +14.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, with a decrease of -2.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 84%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per cubic meter in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per cubic meter), while Swaziland ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+14.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
