Totaliser Market Size in SADC

The SADC totaliser market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, growing by 374% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a abrupt decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Totaliser Production in SADC

In value terms, totaliser production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -22.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 73% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of continuous and discontinuous totalisers, when their volume decreased by -13.7% to X units. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 131% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, totaliser exports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 144% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units) was the major exporter of continuous and discontinuous totalisers, mixing up 78% of total exports. Swaziland (X units) held a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Zimbabwe (7.3%). Tanzania (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+67.0%), Swaziland (+43.5%) and Tanzania (+10.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +67.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe increased by +11, +10 and +7.3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest totaliser supplier in SADC, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 4.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 2.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Swaziland (+87.1% per year) and Tanzania (+26.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zimbabwe ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+22.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Totaliser Imports

Imports in SADC

Totaliser imports soared to X units in 2021, jumping by 721% against the previous year. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, totaliser imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, resulting at X units, which was approx. 91% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Botswana (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Zimbabwe (X units) - together made up 6.5% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to totaliser imports into South Africa stood at -6.9%. At the same time, Mozambique (+45.9%) and Zimbabwe (+23.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +45.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Botswana (-18.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+2.3 p.p.) and Mozambique (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Botswana saw its share reduced by -5.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and Mozambique ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 51% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +26.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, with a decrease of -83.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a moderate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 829%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2020, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+17.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
