The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 37%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, conveyor or transmission belt imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild slump. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 62% of total imports in 2021. Zambia (X tons) took a 7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (6.5%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (6.1%). Mozambique (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+16.0%), Tanzania (+6.8%), Zambia (+5.3%), Mozambique (+2.6%) and Botswana (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +16.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-3.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.1 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.1 p.p.) and Zambia (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-1.8 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (-2.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported conveyor or transmission belts or belting in SADC, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with an 8.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -1.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (+1.7% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.2% per year).

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (-1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
