Overall, exports showed a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 118%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, copper bar, rod and profile exports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 76%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the key exporter of copper bars, rods and profiles in SADC, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 85% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), making up a 12% share of total exports. Botswana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+76.2%) and Tanzania (+34.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +76.2% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania and Botswana increased by +12 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest copper bar, rod and profile supplier in SADC, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -3.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+56.7% per year) and Botswana (+85.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 7% against the previous year. Export price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, copper bar, rod and profile export price increased by +80.6% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 24%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+16.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of copper bars, rods and profiles imported in SADC surged to X tons, with an increase of 28% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, copper bar, rod and profile imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a mild decrease. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) represented the major importers of copper bars, rods and profiles in 2022, finishing at near 34% and 24% of total imports, respectively. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Swaziland (8.7%). The following importers - Malawi (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Namibia (with a CAGR of +17.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported copper bars, rods and profiles in SADC, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -3.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.8% per year) and Tanzania (+8.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -5.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 21%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
