In 2021, shipments abroad of copper powders and flakes decreased by -35.3% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports faced a precipitous decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, copper powder exports totaled $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a precipitous setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 77% of total exports. Zambia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (9.1%).
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the copper powders and flakes exports, with a CAGR of +7.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-39.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+72 p.p.) and Zambia (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Democratic Republic of the Congo saw its share reduced by -85.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest copper powder supplier in SADC, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 7.9% share of total exports.
In South Africa, copper powder exports expanded at an average annual rate of +23.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (-40.3% per year) and Zambia (-0.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 62% against the previous year. Export price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+14.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, purchases abroad of copper powders and flakes increased by 20% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 93%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, copper powder imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 91%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Zambia dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 96% of total imports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Zambia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the copper powders and flakes imports, with a CAGR of -13.6% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (-15.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The shares of the largest importers remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Zambia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported copper powders and flakes in SADC, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with an 8.3% share of total imports.
In Zambia, copper powder imports contracted by an average annual rate of -15.2% over the period from 2012-2021.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 2.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 6.4%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia amounted to $X per ton.
