Imports by Country
South Africa was the key importer of copper tubes and pipes in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 47% of total imports in 2021. Zimbabwe (X tons) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (6.6%). Botswana (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Angola (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Lesotho (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of copper tubes and pipes. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+27.2%), Lesotho (+20.8%), Zimbabwe (+10.5%), Swaziland (+7.8%), Namibia (+7.6%), Zambia (+5.9%) and Mozambique (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +27.2% from 2012-2021. Tanzania and Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Botswana (-2.2%) and Angola (-10.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zimbabwe (+10 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.8 p.p.), Namibia (+1.9 p.p.) and Lesotho (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Botswana, Angola and South Africa saw its share reduced by -1.5%, -9% and -9.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported copper tubes and pipes in SADC, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 5.7% share.
In South Africa, copper tube and pipe imports declined by an average annual rate of -1.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Zimbabwe (+6.1% per year) and Namibia (+13.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 22% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight slump. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
