In 2021, the SADC copper pipe and fitting market increased by 8.2% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a pronounced descent. In value terms, copper pipe and fitting exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the major exporter of copper tubes, pipes and fitting in SADC, creating 99% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the copper tubes, pipes and fitting exports, with a CAGR of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2021, purchases abroad of copper tubes, pipes and fitting increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, copper pipe and fitting imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the largest importer of copper tubes, pipes and fitting in SADC, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 60% of total imports in 2021. Zimbabwe (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by Botswana (6%). The following importers - Mauritius (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Angola (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - together made up 20% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to copper pipe and fitting imports into South Africa stood at +3.2%. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+10.0%), Swaziland (+7.8%), Mozambique (+7.3%), Botswana (+5.2%), Namibia (+3.3%), Tanzania (+3.0%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +10.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mauritius (-1.5%) and Angola (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Zimbabwe and South Africa increased by +4.8 and +3.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported copper tubes, pipes and fitting in SADC, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 6.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 4.5% share.

In South Africa, copper pipe and fitting imports increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (+5.8% per year) and Mauritius (-1.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 21% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a slight downturn. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
