Couscous Market Size in SADC

The SADC couscous market reduced to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -1.8% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +15.1% against 2019 indices. The total production indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +13.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Couscous Exports

Exports in SADC

Couscous exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, picking up by 67% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, exports posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 126% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, couscous exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 100% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), comprising a 7.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to couscous exports from South Africa stood at +22.3%. At the same time, Swaziland (+2,564.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +2,564.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Swaziland increased by +42 and +7.1 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest couscous supplier in SADC, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +12.1%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (-4.6%).

Couscous Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2021, supplies from abroad of couscous increased by 18% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after four years of decline. In general, imports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 90%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, couscous imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +58.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 72% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Lesotho (X tons), creating a 9.1% share of total imports. Angola (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to couscous imports into South Africa stood at +7.2%. At the same time, Angola (+19.4%), Botswana (+17.8%), Madagascar (+16.1%), Lesotho (+8.6%) and Mauritius (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +19.4% from 2012-2021. Angola (+2.8 p.p.), Madagascar (+2 p.p.), Botswana (+2 p.p.) and South Africa (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported couscous in SADC, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 7.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Lesotho, with a 5.4% share.

In South Africa, couscous imports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+6.1% per year) and Lesotho (-1.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 7.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
