Cow Peas Market Size in SADC

In 2021, the SADC cow peas market decreased by -9.7% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Cow Peas Production in SADC

In value terms, cow peas production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Tanzania (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), with a combined 77% share of total production. Malawi and Madagascar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Madagascar (with a CAGR of +19.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cow peas yield amounted to X kg per ha in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2020 figures. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the cow peas harvested area in SADC declined modestly to X ha, stabilizing at 2020 figures. Overall, the harvested area saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 11%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the cow peas harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Cow Peas Exports

Exports in SADC

Cow peas exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, picking up by 34% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 361% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cow peas exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 387%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Madagascar dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Malawi (X tons), making up a 4.6% share of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Madagascar increased at an average annual rate of +41.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tanzania (+55.5%), Malawi (+22.3%) and South Africa (+14.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +55.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Madagascar and Tanzania increased by +32 and +2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Madagascar ($X) remains the largest cow peas supplier in SADC, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 3.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Malawi, with a 2.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Madagascar stood at +42.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+14.5% per year) and Malawi (+17.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Cow Peas Imports

Imports in SADC

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of cow peas (dry) decreased by -46.5% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 91% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cow peas imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 81%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the major importer of cow peas (dry), mixing up 44% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together creating a 45% share of total imports. Lesotho (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cow peas (dry) imports, with a CAGR of +149.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+70.6%), Lesotho (+58.3%), Mozambique (+48.1%) and Botswana (+9.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Tanzania (-4.4%) and Zimbabwe (-10.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+44 p.p.), Mozambique (+14 p.p.), Botswana (+7.1 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+6.7 p.p.) and Lesotho (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Zimbabwe (-6.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Botswana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 72% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, South Africa, with a CAGR of +143.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 5.8% against the previous year. Import price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 40% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
