The SADC cranks and crankshafts market expanded slightly to $X in 2022, growing by 1.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the market value increased by 9.6% against the previous year. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cranks and crankshafts production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 11%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, shipments abroad of cranks and crankshafts increased by 0.2% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cranks and crankshafts exports dropped notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 27%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 66% of total exports. Namibia (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mauritius (11%) and Zambia (5.4%). Botswana (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -6.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (+89.4%) and Namibia (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +89.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zambia (-1.8%) and Botswana (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mauritius (+11 p.p.) and Namibia (+8.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Botswana and South Africa saw its share reduced by -2.5% and -18% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest cranks and crankshafts supplier in SADC, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 4.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 2.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -7.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (-1.3% per year) and Zambia (-7.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -15.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mauritius ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, overseas purchases of cranks and crankshafts increased by 23% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, cranks and crankshafts imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 19%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest importer of cranks and crankshafts, mixing up 48% of total imports. Tanzania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (7.6%), Zimbabwe (7.2%) and Angola (4.7%). The following importers - Zambia (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - together made up 6.2% of total imports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of cranks and crankshafts. At the same time, Mozambique (+14.0%), Zimbabwe (+12.2%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+6.2%) and Tanzania (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +14.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zambia (-2.4%) and Angola (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+6.4 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+4.9 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.4 p.p.) and Mozambique (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-4.1 p.p.) and South Africa (-5.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 7.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 5.9% share.
