The SADC crude maize oil market expanded modestly to $X in 2022, surging by 1.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, crude maize oil production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a pronounced slump. From 2015 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of crude maize (corn) oil decreased by -63.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 46,562%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crude maize oil exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 33,671%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Tanzania (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 100% of total exports in 2022.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +106.6%).

In value terms, South Africa ($X) and Tanzania ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +110.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 76% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a mild expansion. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+1.8%).

Imports in SADC

In 2022, imports of crude maize (corn) oil in SADC reduced modestly to X tons, waning by -2.3% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 382% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, crude maize oil imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 389% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Namibia (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) dominates imports structure, together making up 84% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), generating an 8.2% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Lesotho (with a CAGR of +23.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Namibia ($X), Lesotho ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 94% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Lesotho, with a CAGR of +30.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+11.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
