The SADC marble and travertine crude market totaled $X in 2022, with an increase of 2% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a pronounced shrinkage. In 2022, marble and travertine crude exports in SADC reduced to X tons, which is down by -14.9% on 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 248% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the crude exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, marble and travertine crude exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 253%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Namibia prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2022. Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Namibia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the marble and travertine exports, with a CAGR of +8.2% from 2012 to 2022. Angola (-2.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Namibia (+8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-3.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Namibia ($X) remains the largest marble and travertine crude supplier in SADC, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 1.4% share of total exports.
In Namibia, marble and travertine crude exports increased at an average annual rate of +15.6% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 65%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Angola totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+6.9%).

Imports in SADC
In 2022, purchases abroad of marble and travertine decreased by -34.8% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a precipitous contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, crude imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, marble and travertine crude imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a sharp downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 79% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 58% of total imports. Zambia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Angola (X tons). All these countries together took near 29% share of total imports. Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to marble and travertine crude imports into South Africa stood at -29.4%. At the same time, Madagascar (+32.5%) and Zambia (+16.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +32.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-16.5%), Namibia (-19.3%), Mozambique (-21.7%) and Angola (-32.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zambia (+12 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.4 p.p.), Namibia (+2.2 p.p.) and Madagascar (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola and South Africa saw its share reduced by -5.7% and -20.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Zambia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 63% of total imports. Angola, Namibia, Mozambique and Madagascar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
Among the main importing countries, Madagascar, with a CAGR of +38.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, marble and travertine crude import price increased by +75.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 64% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
