The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 22%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest cucumber and gherkin supplier in SADC, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 0.8% share of total exports.

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 3.8% against the previous year. Imports in SADC
In 2022, approx. X tons of cucumbers and gherkins were imported in SADC; with a decrease of -6% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 35%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cucumber and gherkin imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports by Country
Botswana was the major importer of cucumbers and gherkins in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 52% of total imports in 2022. Swaziland (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Lesotho (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons). All these countries together held near 43% share of total imports. Mozambique (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cucumber and gherkin imports into Botswana stood at +7.8%. At the same time, Lesotho (+15.8%), Swaziland (+13.8%), Mozambique (+5.8%) and South Africa (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +15.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Botswana, Swaziland and Lesotho increased by +22, +11 and +9.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Botswana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cucumbers and gherkins in SADC, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Lesotho, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Botswana stood at +5.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Swaziland (+13.4% per year) and Lesotho (+15.9% per year).
