Currant And Gooseberry Market Size in SADC

In 2021, after five years of growth, there was decline in the SADC currant and gooseberry market, when its value decreased by -0.7% to $X. The total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +33.4% against 2014 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Currant And Gooseberry Production in SADC

In value terms, currant and gooseberry production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 60% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Zimbabwe (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons), together accounting for 97% of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Madagascar (with a CAGR of +2.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Currant And Gooseberry Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of currants and gooseberries, when their volume decreased by -46.5% to X tons. In general, exports showed a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In value terms, currant and gooseberry exports declined sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 65% of total exports. Madagascar (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 28% share, followed by Zimbabwe (6.3%).

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the currants and gooseberries exports, with a CAGR of +7.7% from 2012 to 2021. Madagascar (-7.5%) and Zimbabwe (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +40 percentage points.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) emerged as the largest currant and gooseberry supplier in SADC, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with a 28% share of total exports.

In South Africa, currant and gooseberry exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Madagascar (-5.6% per year) and Zimbabwe (+1.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 8.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, currant and gooseberry export price increased by +11.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+11.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Currant And Gooseberry Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2021, the amount of currants and gooseberries imported in SADC dropped modestly to X tons, almost unchanged from the year before. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 94% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, currant and gooseberry imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 93%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Botswana represented the major importer of currants and gooseberries in SADC, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 44% of total imports in 2021. Namibia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 22% share, followed by Mauritius (16%), Swaziland (5.7%) and South Africa (5.6%). Seychelles (X kg) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Mauritius (with a CAGR of +39.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest currant and gooseberry importing markets in SADC were Mauritius ($X), Botswana ($X) and Namibia ($X), together accounting for 76% of total imports.

Mauritius, with a CAGR of +41.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 2.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 14%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
