Calendering cylinder exports skyrocketed to X units in 2021, jumping by 213% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports recorded a modest increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, calendering cylinder exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which recorded 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X units), generating a 14% share of total exports. Namibia (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cylinders for calendering exports, with a CAGR of +9.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+8.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Namibia (-20.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Zambia increased by +43 and +6.4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest calendering cylinder supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 6.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (+2.8% per year) and Namibia (-13.7% per year).

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 30%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per unit), while Zambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of cylinders for calendering, when their volume increased by 33% to X units. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, calendering cylinder imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 12%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units), Zambia (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) was the main importer of cylinders for calendering in SADC, mixing up 79% of total import. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X units) and Mozambique (X units), together committing a 12% share of total imports. Mauritius (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mauritius (with a CAGR of +27.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest calendering cylinder importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Zambia ($X) and Mozambique ($X), together comprising 64% of total imports. These countries were followed by Namibia, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mauritius, which together accounted for a further 28%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mauritius, with a CAGR of +20.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, dropping by -16.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per unit), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
