Dairy Machinery Market Size in SADC

The SADC dairy machinery market totaled $X in 2022, picking up by 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dairy machinery production rose significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, dairy machinery exports in SADC reduced remarkably to X units, which is down by -48.2% on the previous year. Overall, exports saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 319% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dairy machinery exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 476%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) represented the largest exporter of dairy machinery, committing 61% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Malawi (X units), making up a 26% share of total exports. Mauritius (X units), Tanzania (X units), Namibia (X units) and Botswana (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to dairy machinery exports from South Africa stood at -12.0%. At the same time, Malawi (+31.1%), Tanzania (+7.2%), Namibia (+4.1%) and Mauritius (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +31.1% from 2012-2022. Botswana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Malawi (+25 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.7 p.p.), Mauritius (+2.3 p.p.) and Namibia (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -30.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Malawi ($X) and Mauritius ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 98% share of total exports.

Malawi, with a CAGR of +80.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -6.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+37.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Dairy Machinery Imports

Imports in SADC

Dairy machinery imports soared to X units in 2022, with an increase of 61% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 100%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dairy machinery imports rose to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -14.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Tanzania was the major importer of dairy machinery in SADC, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was near 43% of total imports in 2022. Zimbabwe (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Madagascar (14%), South Africa (6.9%) and Zambia (4.7%). The following importers - Angola (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) - each recorded an 8% share of total imports.

Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dairy machinery imports, with a CAGR of +47.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Madagascar (+40.1%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+27.1%), Zimbabwe (+14.7%), Zambia (+5.4%) and Angola (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-14.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania, Madagascar, Zimbabwe and Democratic Republic of the Congo increased by +41, +13, +9.4 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and Madagascar ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 61% share of total imports. South Africa, Angola, Zambia and Democratic Republic of the Congo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +59.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -36.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 105%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+25.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
