In 2021, unroasted decaffeinated coffee exports in SADC fell to X tons, waning by -10.6% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, unroasted decaffeinated coffee exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a deep contraction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the main exporter of unroasted decaffeinated coffee in SADC, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 54% of total exports in 2021. Tanzania (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons). All these countries together took near 41% share of total exports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +53.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest unroasted decaffeinated coffee supplier in SADC, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 2.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -9.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+3.4% per year) and Madagascar (-0.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 35% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, after six years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of unroasted decaffeinated coffee, when their volume increased by 26% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, unroasted decaffeinated coffee imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) was the key importer of unroasted decaffeinated coffee in SADC, making up 63% of total import. Comoros (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9% share, followed by Swaziland (7.9%) and Mozambique (4.6%). Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Comoros (with a CAGR of +11.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Namibia ($X) and Botswana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 69% of total imports. Swaziland, Mozambique, Zambia and Comoros lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.
Comoros, with a CAGR of +7.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 29% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Comoros ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
