In value terms, denatured ethyl alcohol exports totaled $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +91.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), generating a 4.9% share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the denatured ethyl alcohol and other denatured spirits exports, with a CAGR of +12.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Swaziland (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +9 percentage points.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest denatured ethyl alcohol supplier in SADC, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 5.2% share of total exports.

In South Africa, denatured ethyl alcohol exports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the period from 2012-2021.

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 9.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while South Africa totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (-1.1%).

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of denatured ethyl alcohol and other denatured spirits decreased by -22.3% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 132%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, denatured ethyl alcohol imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 112%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Tanzania (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together achieving 76% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), achieving a 5.3% share of total imports. Angola (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Madagascar (with a CAGR of +34.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Zambia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 79% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +25.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 31% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
