In 2021, the SADC dichloromethane market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of dichloromethane (methylene chloride), when their volume increased by 6.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 15%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dichloromethane exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), comprising a 7.5% share of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mauritius ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Dichloromethane imports soared to X tons in 2021, rising by 33% against the previous year. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 64% of total imports. Tanzania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (7.7%) and Angola (4.8%). Zambia (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dichloromethane imports into South Africa stood at -1.9%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.9%), Tanzania (+4.4%) and Zambia (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dichloromethane (methylene chloride) in SADC, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with an 8.3% share.

In South Africa, dichloromethane imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+10.1% per year) and Tanzania (+1.8% per year).
