Market Size for Diesel-Electric and Other Locomotives in SADC
In 2022, the SADC diesel-electric and other locomotive market decreased by -18.4% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted a prominent increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, diesel-electric and other locomotive production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of diesel-electric and other locomotives exported in SADC contracted modestly to X units, reducing by -2.6% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports recorded a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 156% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, diesel-electric and other locomotive exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 318% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X units) represented the largest exporter of diesel-electric and other locomotives, creating 43% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X units), Botswana (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Namibia (X units), together creating a 54% share of total exports. Malawi (X units) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +16.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest diesel-electric and other locomotive supplier in SADC, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -15.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (+53.1% per year) and Mozambique (+14.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -3.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 230% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per unit), while Malawi ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+31.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imports of Diesel-Electric and Other Locomotives
Imports in SADC
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of diesel-electric and other locomotives, when their volume decreased by -35.8% to X units. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 527% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, diesel-electric and other locomotive imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 156% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Angola dominates imports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 71% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), generating a 7.4% share of total imports. The following importers - Malawi (X units), Mozambique (X units), Namibia (X units), South Africa (X units), Botswana (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Zambia (X units) - together made up 18% of total imports.
Angola was also the fastest-growing in terms of the diesel-electric and other locomotives imports, with a CAGR of +27.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malawi (+23.1%), Namibia (+4.1%) and Tanzania (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Botswana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-2.8%), Mozambique (-7.3%), South Africa (-16.4%) and Zambia (-18.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Angola and Malawi increased by +60 and +3.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Angola ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported diesel-electric and other locomotives in SADC, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 9.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 1.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Angola totaled +25.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (+5.4% per year) and Tanzania (-1.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 47% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 899%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
