Diode Market Size in SADC

The SADC diode market rose significantly to $X in 2021, increasing by 10% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -7.4% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, diode production rose sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -7.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Diode Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2021, overseas shipments of diodes, other than photosensitive or light emitting diodes were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 375% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, diode exports fell to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 424% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Namibia (X units) and South Africa (X units) prevails in exports structure, together making up 92% of total exports. The following exporters - Malawi (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Angola (X units) - each reached a 5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +38.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest diode supplier in SADC, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with an 8.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Malawi, with a 1.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +4.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (-11.5% per year) and Malawi (-1.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, dropping by -42.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 200% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020, and then contracted notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Diode Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2021, purchases abroad of diodes, other than photosensitive or light emitting diodes was finally on the rise to reach X units after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 80%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, diode imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 90%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the main importing country with an import of about X units, which reached 61% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), Malawi (X units) and Botswana (X units), together comprising a 26% share of total imports. Madagascar (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Zimbabwe (X units) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to diode imports into South Africa stood at -6.7%. At the same time, Malawi (+21.2%), Mozambique (+12.3%), Zimbabwe (+10.9%) and Tanzania (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +21.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Madagascar (-4.2%) and Botswana (-15.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique increased by +7.6, +6.3 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported diodes, other than photosensitive or light emitting diodes in SADC, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Malawi, with a 2.4% share.

In South Africa, diode imports shrank by an average annual rate of -1.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+7.4% per year) and Malawi (+16.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, jumping by 28% against the previous year. Import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, diode import price increased by +140.3% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 44% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
