Direct Dye Market Size in SADC

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in the SADC direct dye market, when its value increased by 1.7% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Direct Dye Production in SADC

In value terms, direct dye production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of direct dyes and preparations based thereon decreased by -35.3% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, direct dye exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 127%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the main exporter of direct dyes and preparations based thereon in SADC, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 84% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons), generating an 11% share of total exports. Swaziland (X kg) and Mauritius (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to direct dye exports from South Africa stood at -8.3%. At the same time, Namibia (+10.3%) and Mauritius (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +10.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Swaziland (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Namibia (+8.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Swaziland (-2.2 p.p.) and South Africa (-8.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest direct dye supplier in SADC, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 2.9% share.

In South Africa, direct dye exports contracted by an average annual rate of -9.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (+23.3% per year) and Mauritius (+8.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 131% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+11.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X tons of direct dyes and preparations based thereon were imported in SADC; declining by -40% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 55% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, direct dye imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 74% of total imports in 2021. Angola (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Zambia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 12% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to direct dye imports into South Africa stood at -6.2%. At the same time, Madagascar (+21.0%), Zambia (+15.0%), Angola (+14.4%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+14.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +21.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-13.1%) and Mauritius (-15.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Angola, Zambia, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Madagascar increased by +5.9, +4.2, +3.1 and +2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported direct dyes and preparations based thereon in SADC, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -7.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Zambia (+24.3% per year) and Angola (+17.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 85% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a mild downturn. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
