In 2021, the SADC direction finding compass market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed a perceptible descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, shipments abroad of direction finding compasses was finally on the rise to reach X units after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 244%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, direction finding compass exports stood at $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 117%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the major exporter of direction finding compasses in SADC, with the volume of exports recording X units, which was approx. 46% of total exports in 2021. Angola (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 29% share, followed by Mozambique (8.3%), Mauritius (8.1%) and Tanzania (5.4%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mauritius (with a CAGR of +79.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest direction finding compass supplying countries in SADC were South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Mozambique ($X), with a combined 82% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Tanzania and Mauritius, which together accounted for a further 14%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Mauritius, with a CAGR of +43.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, declining by -31.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 80%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per unit), while Mauritius ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+13.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

Direction finding compass imports soared to X units in 2021, jumping by 160% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, direction finding compass imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 236% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Angola (X units) and South Africa (X units) represented roughly 51% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Mauritius (X units), together making up a 33% share of total imports. Seychelles (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +32.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported direction finding compasses in SADC, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 7% share.

In South Africa, direction finding compass imports decreased by an average annual rate of -7.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (+0.5% per year) and Tanzania (+13.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 6.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 356% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
