Disperse Dye Market Size in SADC
In 2021, the SADC disperse dye market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a mild contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Disperse Dye Production in SADC
In value terms, disperse dye production expanded remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, overseas shipments of disperse dyes and preparations based thereon increased by 26% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 137% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, disperse dye exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), constituting a 5.1% share of total exports. The following exporters - Zambia (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - each recorded a 5.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to disperse dye exports from South Africa stood at +12.5%. At the same time, Zambia (+37.0%), Angola (+23.2%) and Swaziland (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +37.0% from 2012-2021. South Africa (+16 p.p.), Zambia (+3.1 p.p.) and Angola (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Swaziland saw its share reduced by -3.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest disperse dye supplier in SADC, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Angola, with a 1.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +9.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Swaziland (+0.5% per year) and Angola (+13.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 8.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 58% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, after six years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of disperse dyes and preparations based thereon, when their volume increased by 46% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, disperse dye imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Tanzania (X tons), distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) represented the key importers of disperse dyes and preparations based thereon, together constituting 83% of total imports. Mozambique (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +11.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Mauritius ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 71% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +13.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -9.6% against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, disperse dye import price increased by +55.6% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
