The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the largest importer of dog and cat food, committing 35% of total imports. Lesotho (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 20% share, followed by Namibia (11%), Angola (11%) and Botswana (7.7%). Mauritius (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
