Dolomite Market Size in SADC

The SADC dolomite market soared to $X in 2021, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dolomite production rose significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

For the fifth consecutive year, SADC recorded growth in shipments abroad of dolomite, which increased by 19% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 121%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, dolomite exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 173% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Namibia represented the major exporter of dolomite in SADC, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 83% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), committing a 13% share of total exports. South Africa (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Namibia increased at an average annual rate of +11.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+37.5%) and South Africa (+16.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +37.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Zambia increased by +13 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Namibia ($X) remains the largest dolomite supplier in SADC, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 2.8% share of total exports.

In Namibia, dolomite exports increased at an average annual rate of +9.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+37.0% per year) and Zambia (+48.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 31% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+17.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X tons of dolomite were imported in SADC; increasing by 191% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 513%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dolomite imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted measured growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 131%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 93% of total imports in 2021. Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +21.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Swaziland (+35.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +35.3% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Swaziland increased by +17 and +2.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dolomite in SADC, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 2.1% share of total imports.

In South Africa, dolomite imports increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the period from 2012-2021.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -38% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Swaziland stood at $X per ton.
