Domestic Appliances Market Size in SADC

The SADC domestic appliances market rose rapidly to $X in 2021, increasing by 9.5% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a mild expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Domestic Appliances Production in SADC

In value terms, domestic appliances production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -5.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 22%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Domestic Appliances Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2021, shipments abroad of domestic appliances was finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, domestic appliances exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X units, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X units), achieving an 8.8% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -9.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Swaziland (+7.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +7.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Swaziland increased by +6.9 percentage points.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest domestic appliances supplier in SADC, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 3.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -1.9%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -10.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 29%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Swaziland stood at $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+8.3%).

Domestic Appliances Imports

Imports in SADC

Domestic appliances imports was estimated at X units in 2021, with an increase of 15% compared with the year before. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible slump. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, domestic appliances imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, recording X units, which was near 51% of total imports in 2021. Angola (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X units), Mozambique (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Zambia (X units). All these countries together held approx. 30% share of total imports. Mauritius (X units) and Botswana (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to domestic appliances imports into South Africa stood at -2.2%. At the same time, Tanzania (+2.8%) and Mozambique (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +2.8% from 2012-2021. Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Botswana (-3.8%), Zambia (-6.4%) and Angola (-15.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+7.6 p.p.), Tanzania (+3.2 p.p.), Mozambique (+2 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Angola (-17.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported domestic appliances in SADC, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 6% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+7.2% per year) and Angola (-13.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
