The SADC market for drawn glass and blown glass was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after four years of decline. The total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production of Drawn Glass And Blown Glass in SADC

In value terms, drawn glass and blown glass production expanded notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 49%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Drawn glass and blown glass exports surged to X square meters in 2021, with an increase of 52% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 110% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X square meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, drawn glass and blown glass exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a pronounced increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 460%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X square meters, which reached 77% of total exports. Tanzania (X square meters) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Lesotho (X square meters). All these countries together took near 16% share of total exports. Namibia (X square meters) and Zambia (X square meters) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -7.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Namibia (+65.0%), Zambia (+48.5%) and Lesotho (+45.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +65.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Lesotho (+5.3 p.p.), Namibia (+3 p.p.), Zambia (+2.3 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-11.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest drawn glass and blown glass supplying countries in SADC were Tanzania ($X), South Africa ($X) and Lesotho ($X), with a combined 97% share of total exports. Zambia and Namibia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 0.7%.

Namibia, with a CAGR of +73.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per square meter, dropping by -15.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 347%. The level of export peaked at $X per square meter in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per square meter), while Namibia ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+15.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Drawn Glass And Blown Glass

Imports in SADC

For the fourth consecutive year, SADC recorded growth in overseas purchases of drawn glass and blown glass, which increased by 126% to X square meters in 2021. Overall, imports saw a buoyant increase. The volume of import peaked at X square meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, drawn glass and blown glass imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 91% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Tanzania dominates imports structure, amounting to X square meters, which was approx. 84% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X square meters), achieving a 6.9% share of total imports. The following importers - Mozambique (X square meters) and Mauritius (X square meters) - together made up 5% of total imports.

Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the drawn glass and blown glass imports, with a CAGR of +23.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.2%) and Mozambique (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Mauritius (-10.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+55 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mozambique, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mauritius saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -3.7% and -11.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported drawn glass and blown glass in SADC, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Tanzania totaled +6.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+6.7% per year) and Mozambique (+7.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per square meter, declining by -22.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 45%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per square meter), while Tanzania ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
