Dried Onion Market Size in SADC

The SADC dried onion market shrank to $X in 2021, reducing by -7.3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +21.0% against 2019 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, dried onion production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +14.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 29%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of dried onions decreased by -54.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 105%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dried onion exports declined notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 90%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tanzania represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 62% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons). All these countries together took near 35% share of total exports. Angola (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dried onions exports, with a CAGR of +23.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Madagascar (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Angola (-8.2%) and South Africa (-16.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania and Madagascar increased by +57 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the largest dried onion supplier in SADC, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 11% share.

In Tanzania, dried onion exports expanded at an average annual rate of +20.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Madagascar (+3.4% per year) and South Africa (-10.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 85% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of dried onions increased by 26% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 94% of total imports in 2021. Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dried onion imports into South Africa stood at +4.8%. At the same time, Mauritius (+15.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +15.4% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +4.7 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dried onions in SADC, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 2.6% share of total imports.
