Tanzania (X tons) represented roughly 96% of total exports in 2021.

Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dried or salted fish exports, with a CAGR of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021. Tanzania (+25 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) also remains the largest dried or salted fish supplier in SADC.

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -7.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 70%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Tanzania.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of dried or salted fish decreased by -42.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 22%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dried or salted fish imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 55% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Zimbabwe (X tons) and Angola (X tons) represented roughly 58% of total imports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (14%). Mauritius (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Comoros (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +5.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest dried or salted fish importing markets in SADC were Angola ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for 82% of total imports. These countries were followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius, Comoros and Zambia, which together accounted for a further 14%.

Mauritius, with a CAGR of +4.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
