The SADC dried or smoked fish market reached $X in 2021, increasing by 2% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a slight reduction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production of Dried Or Smoked Fish in SADC

In value terms, dried or smoked fish production contracted modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 9% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports of Dried Or Smoked Fish

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in shipments abroad of dried or smoked fish, when their volume increased by 1.1% to X tons. Overall, exports saw a measured increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 100%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dried or smoked fish exports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 97%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tanzania was the main exporter of dried or smoked fish in SADC, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 66% of total exports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (7.4%) and Namibia (7%). The following exporters - Madagascar (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.5% share of total exports.

Exports from Tanzania increased at an average annual rate of +19.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+111.3%) and Madagascar (+7.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +111.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mozambique (-6.8%), South Africa (-7.5%) and Namibia (-11.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania and Botswana increased by +47 and +7.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the largest dried or smoked fish supplier in SADC, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 5.7% share.

In Tanzania, dried or smoked fish exports expanded at an average annual rate of +19.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-5.8% per year) and Namibia (-10.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -5.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Dried Or Smoked Fish

Imports in SADC

In 2021, overseas purchases of dried or smoked fish were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dried or smoked fish imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) was the major importer of dried or smoked fish, mixing up 70% of total imports. Angola (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by South Africa (7.1%) and Zimbabwe (5.8%). Mauritius (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dried or smoked fish imports into Democratic Republic of the Congo stood at +1.9%. At the same time, Mauritius (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +3.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-10.4%), Angola (-12.6%) and Zimbabwe (-14.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Democratic Republic of the Congo (+32 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa, Zimbabwe and Angola saw its share reduced by -5.3%, -9.5% and -15.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest dried or smoked fish importing markets in SADC were Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Angola ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 80% share of total imports. Zimbabwe and Mauritius lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mauritius, with a CAGR of +3.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -15.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 46%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
