In 2021, the SADC dry-cleaning machine market decreased by -42.1% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, showed a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dry-cleaning machine production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 4.7% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, overseas shipments of dry-cleaning machines were finally on the rise to reach X units after three years of decline. In general, exports posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 231%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dry-cleaning machine exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X units, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2021. Angola (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Mauritius (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+13.0%) and Mauritius (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +13.0% from 2012-2021. Mozambique experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Mozambique and Angola increased by +18, +3.6 and +1.6 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest dry-cleaning machine supplier in SADC, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Angola, with an 11% share.

In South Africa, dry-cleaning machine exports contracted by an average annual rate of -5.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+2.3% per year) and Angola (+39.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -40.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 182% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+25.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

Dry-cleaning machine imports surged to X units in 2021, with an increase of 31% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 97% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dry-cleaning machine imports fell to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 70% of total imports in 2021. Comoros (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 8% share, followed by Mozambique (7.1%) and Malawi (6.3%). The following importers - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Zambia (X units) and Angola (X units) - each resulted at a 5.9% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -6.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Comoros (+35.4%), Mozambique (+27.7%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+14.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Comoros emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +35.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malawi (-3.1%), Zambia (-4.6%) and Angola (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Comoros (+7.7 p.p.), Mozambique (+6.6 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-11.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dry-cleaning machines in SADC, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with an 11% share.

In South Africa, dry-cleaning machine imports plunged by an average annual rate of -4.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+18.8% per year) and Angola (-20.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -33.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 114% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit), while Malawi ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
