Market Size for Duck and Goose Meat in SADC

After four years of growth, the SADC duck and goose meat market decreased by -1.3% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Production of Duck and Goose Meat in SADC

In value terms, duck and goose meat production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 152%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Madagascar (X tons) remains the largest duck and goose meat producing country in SADC, accounting for 79% of total volume. Moreover, duck and goose meat production in Madagascar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Mozambique (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Africa (X tons), with a 5.3% share.

In Madagascar, duck and goose meat production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Mozambique (+3.9% per year) and South Africa (+0.7% per year).

The average duck and goose meat yield stood at X kg per head in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 6.3%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X kg per head. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the duck and goose meat yield remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for duck and goose meat production in SADC; almost unchanged from 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 8.8%. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports of Duck and Goose Meat

Exports in SADC

In 2022, shipments abroad of duck and goose meat increased by 29% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after five years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 234%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, duck and goose meat exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 235% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), creating a 4.9% share of total exports. The following exporters - Swaziland (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - together made up 6.9% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to duck and goose meat exports from South Africa stood at -2.2%. At the same time, Swaziland (+52.0%) and Mauritius (+14.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +52.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-7.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Swaziland and Mauritius increased by +4.3 and +2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest duck and goose meat supplier in SADC, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 3.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 2.9% share.

In South Africa, duck and goose meat exports plunged by an average annual rate of -4.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-7.2% per year) and Swaziland (+34.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -6.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 33%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mauritius ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+0.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Duck and Goose Meat

Imports in SADC

In 2022, purchases abroad of duck and goose meat decreased by -22.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports recorded a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 54%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, duck and goose meat imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 77%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Comoros (X tons) and Angola (X tons) dominates imports structure, together mixing up 72% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.6% share, followed by Mauritius (5.9%). The following importers - Lesotho (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - each reached an 8.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +18.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Angola ($X), Comoros ($X) and Mauritius ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 66% of total imports. South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique and Lesotho lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +21.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Comoros ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
