Egg Product Market Size in SADC
After seven years of growth, the SADC egg product market decreased by -2.3% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +48.5% against 2013 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
Egg Product Production in SADC
In value terms, egg product production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +49.0% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
Egg Product Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2021, overseas shipments of egg products were finally on the rise to reach X tons after six years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic descent. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, egg product exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a significant decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 46%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 55% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons) and Malawi (X tons), together comprising a 34% share of total exports. Mozambique (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +88.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Zambia ($X) remains the largest egg product supplier in SADC, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Angola, with an 8.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Zambia stood at +13.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-40.5% per year) and Angola (+14.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 75% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Mauritius ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+20.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Egg Product Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2021, purchases abroad of egg products was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 185% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, egg product imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 188%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the key importer of egg products, creating 66% of total imports. Comoros (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (6.6%) and Angola (5.6%). The following importers - Mauritius (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) - each amounted to a 5.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to egg product imports into South Africa stood at +22.8%. At the same time, Mauritius (+33.6%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+24.2%), Comoros (+19.6%) and Swaziland (+15.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +33.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius and Swaziland increased by +57, +10, +5.8, +2.5 and +1.9 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported egg products in SADC, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 6.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 3.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +20.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (+6.5% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+27.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 9% against the previous year. Import price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 38%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Comoros ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+8.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
