In 2021, the SADC bicycle lighting market increased by 100% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 4,125% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of electrical or battery operated lighting or visual signalling for bicycles, when their volume increased by 50% to X units. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 67%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bicycle lighting exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 127%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units) was the main exporter of electrical or battery operated lighting or visual signalling for bicycles, committing 58% of total exports. Mauritius (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 29% share, followed by Zambia (9.5%). Mozambique (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mauritius (with a CAGR of +137.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest bicycle lighting supplying countries in SADC were South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Zambia ($X), with a combined 95% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Mauritius, with a CAGR of +86.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. Export price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +13.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, bicycle lighting export price decreased by -9.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 163%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per unit), while Zambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+11.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of electrical or battery operated lighting or visual signalling for bicycles increased by 94% to X units in 2021. Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, bicycle lighting imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the key importing country with an import of around X units, which resulted at 60% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X units), constituting a 27% share of total imports. Angola (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Mozambique (X units) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritius (+28.8%) and Mozambique (+10.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +28.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-2.9%) and Tanzania (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritius (+23 p.p.) and South Africa (+8.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Angola (-2.8 p.p.) and Tanzania (-4.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported electrical or battery operated lighting or visual signalling for bicycles in SADC, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 9.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +2.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+18.6% per year) and Mozambique (+19.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per unit), while Mauritius ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
