Machinery Electrical Parts Market Size in SADC
The SADC machinery electrical parts market fell to $X in 2022, shrinking by -8.4% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +12.8% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, machinery electrical parts production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +13.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 30%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of electrical parts of machinery or apparatus, when their volume decreased by -32.4% to X tons. In general, exports, however, saw a mild increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 415%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, machinery electrical parts exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 262%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons), generating a 4.9% share of total exports. Botswana (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to machinery electrical parts exports from South Africa stood at +2.2%. At the same time, Botswana (+34.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +34.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mozambique (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Botswana increased by +4.3 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest machinery electrical parts supplier in SADC, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.
In South Africa, machinery electrical parts exports shrank by an average annual rate of -1.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Botswana (+18.7% per year) and Mozambique (+15.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 41%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+22.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Machinery Electrical Parts Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, purchases abroad of electrical parts of machinery or apparatus increased by 48% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, imports showed a measured expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 179%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, machinery electrical parts imports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 96%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Mozambique (X tons) represented the largest importer of electrical parts of machinery or apparatus, constituting 58% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons) and Namibia (X tons). All these countries together held near 30% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Mozambique was also the fastest-growing in terms of the electrical parts of machinery or apparatus imports, with a CAGR of +27.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-5.6%), Namibia (-5.6%), Zambia (-12.4%) and Angola (-13.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mozambique (+50 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Zambia, Namibia and Angola saw its share reduced by -5.3%, -8.2%, -9.2%, -10.5% and -16% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, the largest machinery electrical parts importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Namibia ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), together accounting for 72% of total imports. Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.
Tanzania, with a CAGR of -0.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -48.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 242% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
