In 2021, the SADC diagnostic equipment market decreased by -10.4% to $X for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, diagnostic equipment production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, approx. X units of electro-diagnostic apparatus, and ultra-violet or infra-red ray apparatus were exported in SADC; increasing by 88% against the year before. In general, exports, however, showed a slight descent. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, diagnostic equipment exports fell significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X units, which was near 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X units), committing a 6.7% share of total exports. Botswana (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of electro-diagnostic apparatus, and ultra-violet or infra-red ray apparatus. At the same time, Mauritius (+21.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +21.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Botswana (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+13 p.p.) and Mauritius (+5.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest diagnostic equipment supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 5.3% share of total exports.
In South Africa, diagnostic equipment exports decreased by an average annual rate of -7.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+16.3% per year) and Botswana (-5.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -61.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 31%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
Diagnostic equipment imports contracted to X units in 2021, dropping by -14.4% against the previous year. In general, imports showed a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 12%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, diagnostic equipment imports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 17%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X units) represented the major importer of electro-diagnostic apparatus, and ultra-violet or infra-red ray apparatus, making up 40% of total imports. Tanzania (X units) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (6.6%), Mauritius (5.9%), Malawi (5%), Madagascar (4.6%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (4.5%).
Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Malawi (+14.1%), Mauritius (+10.8%), Madagascar (+6.4%) and Tanzania (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +14.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Botswana (-2.3%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+10 p.p.), Mauritius (+4.4 p.p.), Malawi (+4 p.p.), Madagascar (+2.9 p.p.) and South Africa (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported electro-diagnostic apparatus, and ultra-violet or infra-red ray apparatus in SADC, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 3.5% share.
In South Africa, diagnostic equipment imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (-6.5% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, surging by 15% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+14.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
