Electronic Chip Market Size in SADC

The SADC electronic chip market was estimated at $X in 2021, surging by 1.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a dramatic decrease. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Electronic Chip Production in SADC

In value terms, electronic chip production rose markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 44% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC

After three years of decline, shipments abroad of electronic chips increased by 164% to X units in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a significant contraction. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, electronic chip exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 60%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Namibia (X units) represented the major exporter of electronic chips, achieving 60% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), committing a 33% share of total exports. The following exporters - Botswana (X units), Mauritius (X units) and Zambia (X units) - each amounted to a 5.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Botswana (with a CAGR of +40.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest electronic chip supplier in SADC, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 6.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 4.1% share.

In South Africa, electronic chip exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (+20.5% per year) and Mauritius (-2.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -49.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 751,874% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2020, and then contracted notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zambia (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+214.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC

Electronic chip imports fell rapidly to X units in 2021, with a decrease of -43.4% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a precipitous setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, electronic chip imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, amounting to X units, which was near 83% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X units), comprising a 6.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Angola (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) - each accounted for a 3.7% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -74.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+177.1%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+14.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +177.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-16.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Botswana (+6.6 p.p.), Angola (+2.1 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-16.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported electronic chips in SADC, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 1.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 0.5% share.

In South Africa, electronic chip imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (-10.7% per year) and Botswana (+113.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 129% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 9,775,587%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Botswana (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+293.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
