Envelope Market Size in SADC

In 2021, the SADC envelope market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the market value increased by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Envelope Production in SADC

In value terms, envelope production rose sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 10%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, envelope exports in SADC expanded significantly to X tons, growing by 8.3% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 34%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, envelope exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the key exporter of envelopes, making up 77% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), achieving a 20% share of total exports. Namibia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -6.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Namibia (+11.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +11.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+2.5 p.p.) and Namibia (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Tanzania (-3.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest envelope supplier in SADC, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

In South Africa, envelope exports contracted by an average annual rate of -7.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (-10.0% per year) and Namibia (+7.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Envelope Imports

Imports in SADC

Envelope imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, growing by 24% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, envelope imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Angola (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) represented roughly 61% of total imports in 2021. Malawi (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.4% share, followed by Zambia (6.3%), Namibia (5.4%) and Mauritius (5.1%). Botswana (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +13.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Angola ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Namibia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 50% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +11.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 16%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
